World Heart Day 2011

Celebration of World Heart Day at Science City
29th September 2011
One World, One Home, One Heart!
From the moment it begins beating until the moment it stops, the human heart works tirelessly. In an average lifetime, the heart beats more than two and a half billion times, without ever pausing to rest. Like a pumping machine, the heart provides the power needed for life.

This life-sustaining power has, throughout time, caused an air of mystery to surround the heart. Modern technology has removed much of the mystery, but there is still an air of fascination and curiosity.

In order to underlines the importance of heart health for individuals and their families with the crucial message that “heart health is in one’s own hands”, the World Heart Federation (WHF) celebrates World Heart Day on 29th September 2011 to inform people around the globe that heart disease and stroke are the world’s leading cause of death, claiming 17.2 million lives each year.

This year the theme of the World Heart Day celebration is ”one world, one home, one heart".
Cardiovascular diseases are the world’s largest killers, claiming 17.5 million lives a year. Risk factors for heart disease and stroke include raised blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels, smoking, inadequate intake of fruit and vegetables, overweight, obesity and physical inactivity.
India will soon have 60 percent heart patients in the world. Currently, Gujarat tops the list of endemic states with a high number of cardiac patients while Rajasthan and Punjab are second and third respectively.

Gujarat Science City has designed an educational and scientific activity for school and college students as well as common public to explore more on this Heart of the matter, the living machine. In addition, Science City has arranged special seminar session on the theme and interactive sessions by the experts.
